A single site layered with 600 years of power: Ming-dynasty garden, Taiping Rebellion palace, and the seat of the Republic of China government under Sun Yat-sen and later Chiang Kai-shek. Few places compress modern Chinese political history this tightly into one walkable complex.
Tip: The office where Chiang Kai-shek worked is preserved almost exactly as he left it in 1949 — don't skip the inner buildings for the garden alone.
Also worth the time: Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum.
Eat: Nanjing Salted Duck
Brined and gently poached rather than roasted — pale, tender, and lightly savory rather than rich. Nanjing is China's 'duck capital,' and this centuries-old preparation is the dish locals actually eat weekly, not just for tourists. Any Nanjing deli or roast-meat counter with ducks displayed whole.
