252 caves and 51,000 carved Buddhist statues cut into a sandstone cliff over the 5th and 6th centuries — one of China's three great grotto sites alongside Dunhuang and Longmen. Tip: The site is about 16km west of the city — budget 30-40 minutes each way by taxi or the tourist bus from the train station.

Tip: Walk the quieter southern and western stretches; most visitors only climb at Yingxun Gate and turn back after 200 meters.

Shanxi's most famous cold cut: beef slow-braised with salt and spice until it slices like ham — dense, rosy, and deeply savory.
