Chengdu to Chongqing
308km by high-speed rail — Chengdu East ↔ Chongqing North. Here's what it actually costs, how long to budget, and what's worth doing at both ends.
How long does Chengdu to Chongqing take?
On the timetable
High-speed rail ~1.5h
Door to door, realistically
2.5h
Booking sites quote the first number. The second is the one that decides your day: it adds about an hour for stations at both ends. Plan the rest of the day around the door-to-door figure and you won't be the person sprinting through a concourse.
Getting there
Trains run roughly every 15 minutes, 140 pairs a day — the fastest take 1h15m. One of the easiest, most frequent HSR corridors in the country; same-day booking is usually fine.
Book through the official 12306 system (Chinese-language, real-name ticketing) or through Trip.com's train booking, which has an English interface and handles the passport-based real-name process for you. Either way, carry the passport you booked with — it's checked at the station gate, not just at booking. Our train booking guide has the full sale-window timeline and what to do when a train shows as sold out.
What to do at each end
Chengdu
Pandas · teahouses · Sichuan food
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
The reason most travelers come to Chengdu: dozens of giant pandas (and red pandas) in leafy, naturalistic enclosures. Go at opening — pandas are most active during the cool morning feeding, and by midday they're asleep in the shade.
Tip: Arrive right at opening; the gap between morning and noon is the gap between playful pandas and furry lumps.
Also worth the time: Kuanzhai Alley.
Eat: Sichuan Hotpot
Chengdu's defining ritual: a split cauldron of numbing-spicy málà broth (chilies and Sichuan peppercorns) you cook at the table. Order a mild broth on one side if you're spice-shy — you still get the full experience. Any hotpot restaurant with a queue of locals out front.
Chongqing
Hongya Cave · monorail · hotpot
Hongya Cave at Night
Chongqing's viral icon: a cliffside warren of traditional stilted buildings (diaojiaolou) stacked eleven storeys up the riverbank, lit gold after dark like a scene from Spirited Away. Wander the levels of shops and food, then cross the river or bridge for the postcard view back.
Tip: Arrive before the lights switch on around dusk to beat the crowds, then stay for the golden glow — weekends are packed.
Also worth the time: The Monorail Through a Building.
Eat: Chongqing Hotpot
The original málà hotpot — even fierier and more numbing than Chengdu's version, built on beef tallow, dried chilies, and Sichuan peppercorn. Order a yuanyang (split) pot with a mild broth on one side if you want to pace yourself. Any riverside hotpot hall in Jiefangbei or the South Bank, ideally with a queue of locals outside.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does the train from Chengdu to Chongqing take?
- High-speed rail ~1.5h. Budget roughly 2.5h door to door, though — the timetable figure leaves out about an hour for stations at both ends. Trains run roughly every 15 minutes, 140 pairs a day — the fastest take 1h15m. One of the easiest, most frequent HSR corridors in the country; same-day booking is usually fine.
- How far is Chengdu from Chongqing?
- 308km by the route itself. Chengdu East ↔ Chongqing North.
- How much does the train from Chengdu to Chongqing cost?
- ¥85–191 second class. This is a directly checked figure, not an estimate — but fares still shift with season and demand, so confirm on booking.
- Which stations do I use?
- Chengdu East ↔ Chongqing North. Chinese cities often have multiple HSR stations — double-check yours matches this pair before booking, since a wrong-station mistake means an extra cross-city trip.
- How far ahead should I book?
- Plan around the ordinary 15-day sale window: that is when seats reliably appear on 12306 and Trip.com. China Railway began piloting a 60-day advance reservation in July 2026, and its announcements do not say whether foreign-passport bookings are included — so treat a successful early reservation as a bonus rather than the plan. The decision rule that actually matters: if your dates fall in a public holiday, Golden Week or the Spring Festival travel period, book the moment the window opens; outside those, a day or two ahead is usually enough on a busy corridor, and same-day is often fine on a quiet one.
