Stone Forest
A 400 sq km maze of grey limestone pillars, some over 30 meters tall, carved by water over 270 million years — the definitive karst landscape and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sani, a branch of the Yi ethnic group, have lived among these formations for centuries and still run the surrounding villages.
Tip: Skip the paid golf-cart loop unless mobility is an issue — the marked walking paths through the Greater Stone Forest section cover the best formations, including the Ashima rock said to resemble a Sani girl from local legend.
Also worth the time: Dianchi Lake.
Eat: Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles
Yunnan's most famous dish, properly done: a bowl of scalding pork or chicken broth sealed under a layer of oil so it stays hot, brought to the table with separate plates of raw meat slices, egg, vegetables, and rice noodles that you tip in yourself, cooking in the residual heat. The dish traces back to Mengzi and Jianshui in Honghe Prefecture, but it was Kunming — where a Republic-era restaurant called Dexinyuan popularized it in the early 1900s — that turned it into Yunnan's national dish. Qiaoxiangyuan (桥香园) or Fuhuayuan (福华园), both multi-branch local chains with English-friendly picture menus.

Lijiang Old Town
A UNESCO World Heritage maze of cobblestone lanes, timber Naxi houses, and canals fed by snowmelt — one of the few old towns in China that's still a living neighborhood, not just a rebuilt shopping street. Come for the architecture, stay for the mountain water running down every alley.
Tip: The main pedestrian streets near Sifang Square are pure souvenir shops — the real town is in the quieter lanes a few turns off the main drag.
