The short version: Guilin is the gateway to China's karst mountain scenery — thousands of limestone peaks along the Li River, with the Longji Rice Terraces further out. The Li River Cruise 漓江游船

The classic: a 4-5 hour cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo past the karst peaks that inspired centuries of Chinese ink painting (and the back of the ¥20 note). Mist, bamboo, water buffalo, and a thousand green pinnacles drifting by. It's the single most iconic river journey in China.

Yangshuo & the Yulong River 阳朔 · 遇龙河

The laid-back town of Yangshuo is the base for the region: cycle or e-bike through rice fields, drift the gentler Yulong River on a bamboo raft, and climb Xianggong Hill for the overlook. It's more relaxed and rural than Guilin city, and where most travelers spend their nights.

The Longji Rice Terraces 龙脊梯田

A few hours north, the Longji ('Dragon's Backbone') Rice Terraces ripple across the mountains in curves carved over 700 years. Green in summer, gold before the autumn harvest, mirror-like when flooded in spring — a different spectacle each season, and a window into the region's ethnic-minority villages.

TicketsBuy at the gate or online; the ticket covers all three areas (Jinkeng, Ping'an, Guzhuang) and is valid for re-entry over 3 days — worth it if you stay overnight.

A limestone cave a short drive from central Guilin, lit in surreal blues, greens, and purples that turn the stalactites and reflecting pool into something closer to a fantasy set than a cave tour. About 500 meters of walkway, entirely paved and easy.

Guilin's single most photographed landmark: a limestone hill worn by the Li and Peach Blossom rivers into the unmistakable shape of an elephant dipping its trunk into the water, a pagoda balanced on its back like a saddle.

Yangshuo West Street 阳朔西街

A 1,400-year-old street turned backpacker strip: bars, night markets, foreign-language menus, and karst peaks looming at the end of the block. Touristy by day, genuinely lively after dark — the social hub of the whole region.

Local tipIt's a launchpad, not a destination — spend an evening here, but base your days around cycling and the river, not the street itself.

Moon Hill 月亮山

A karst peak with a giant moon-shaped hole worn clean through its summit — climb the roughly 800 steps for a view through the arch over the Yangshuo countryside, or watch international climbers work the cliff's 1,000+ bolted routes from below.

Local tipNot a serious hike, but bring water — the stairs are steep and there's no shade for most of the ascent.

    Is Guilin worth visiting?
    For landscape lovers, absolutely — the karst-mountain scenery along the Li River is among the most beautiful in China and unlike anywhere else on a typical itinerary. It's a nature-and-villages destination rather than a city-sights one.
    Should I stay in Guilin or Yangshuo?
    Yangshuo. Guilin city is the transport gateway, but the postcard scenery, cycling, bamboo rafting, and relaxed vibe are all in and around Yangshuo, about 1.5 hours downriver. Most travelers cruise Guilin-to-Yangshuo and stay there.
    How long is the Li River cruise?
    The main tourist cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo runs about 4–5 hours, passing the iconic peaks. Shorter bamboo-raft trips on the quieter Yulong River near Yangshuo are a gentler, cheaper alternative.
    When is the best time to see the rice terraces?
    Each season offers something: spring (April–June) floods the terraces into mirrors, summer turns them lush green, and autumn (before the October harvest) turns them gold. Winter occasionally dusts them with snow.
